Early this month I was able to carve out some time and traveled with my wife to China to visit her mother. I've never traveled overseas and her mother mentioned that going to China to get a taste of international travel was like jumping in the deep end of the pool. Couldn't agree more.
Because I almost didn't get my visa due to my career in journalism I figured I'd keep a low profile in country and shoot 35mm film the entire trip. I'm glad I did so, it let me practice seeing in a different way. Shooting digital is almost too perfect and lets you have a safety net. Film-slide film specifically-is a bit less forgiving. Don't get me wrong, I love the instant feedback and quick turnaround with digital, but there's nothing quite as beautiful than Fuji Velvia.
These photos are both shot on Velvia, top is from the Lama Temple in Beijing at closing time, and the middle one is from the Tengu Fish and Flower market where they sell meat out in the open. Last is a street vendor in the hutongs-the alleys around courtyard houses/hostels near the Forbidden City. I'll be posting more in the coming days, but consider this my red post. See more photos on this Flickr set.
